Cricket's Olympic Return: The Game Comes Back After 128 Years, Set for T20 Format at Los Angeles 2028
New Delhi: A 128-year wait is about to end. Cricket featured in the Olympics for the first and last time at Paris 2026, where only two teams — Great Britain and France — took part. It never returned to the programme. Now, at Los Angeles 2028, the sport comes back not in its traditional guise but in T20 format, and for the first time with both a men's and a women's competition.
The International Olympic Committee approved cricket's inclusion for Los Angeles 2028 at its 141st Session in Mumbai in October 2026. Flag football, baseball-softball, lacrosse and squash were cleared in the same session. That is no coincidence. Under a host-city driven proposal and the IOC's future-facing agenda, priority went to sports that can draw younger audiences and open new markets. Cricket made the strongest case.
The foundation of the return is cricket's audience. An estimated 2.5 billion people follow the game worldwide, with the largest share concentrated in South Asia. In India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal, cricket is not merely a sport but a fixture of social life. For the Olympic movement, this is an audience that traditional Olympic sports cannot reach. For cricket, the Games offer a legitimacy no biennial World Cup or franchise league can provide.
The format decision was straightforward. A three-hour T20 match fits within an Olympic broadcast window; a five-day Test or a full-day ODI does not. The declared structure provides six men's teams and six women's teams. The number is deliberately small so the tournament can be completed inside the 16-17 day Games window and every match retains significance.
That limited field has brought a sharp debate over qualification. With only six places available and more than 100 ICC member associations, competition is bound to be intense. India, Australia, England, Pakistan, South Africa and New Zealand are seen as the conventional contenders, but Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Ireland are not far behind. For associate members this is a historic opening: Olympic participation unlocks funding, sponsorship and investment in domestic infrastructure.
From a player's perspective the lure of an Olympic medal sits on a different plane. World Cups and ICC trophies remain the pinnacle in cricket, but an Olympic medal carries prestige beyond the sport itself. For Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Kane Williamson, Steve Smith, Joe Root, Babar Azam, Jasprit Bumrah, Shaheen Afridi and Pat Cummins, 2028 could plausibly be a late-career target; for younger players it is an entirely new platform. In the women's game, names such as Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur, Ellyse Perry and Nat Sciver-Brunt are likely to become the first to be recorded as Olympians.
For women's cricket this entry is historic. The success of the women's T20 competition at Birmingham 2026 is widely seen as the backdrop to the decision. Reaching the Olympic stage means women cricketers finally get the global visibility their male counterparts command. Several boards, particularly in smaller member nations, are already reallocating budgets and training resources toward women's teams with Olympic qualification in mind. The shift is structural — once a medal pathway exists, ignoring the women's game becomes difficult for any board.
Commercially, too, the decision favours cricket. The Olympic broadcast rights market runs into billions of dollars, and in the Indian subcontinent the addition of cricket is expected to lift viewership significantly. Sponsorship rates, ticket sales and digital rights will feel the effect. For the ICC, meanwhile, entry into the American market is strategic. Initiatives such as Major League Cricket have already been working to popularise the game in the United States, and hosting the Games will accelerate that effort.
The challenges are considerable. The biggest concern is the international calendar, already crowded with biennial World Cups, the Asia Cup, franchise leagues and bilateral series. The 2028 Games fall in July-August, and national boards will have to reshuffle other commitments. Player workload management is already a live issue and an Olympic window could sharpen it. The ICC and organisers must ensure the qualification route is equitable and that no member is forced to abandon domestic commitments.
Another open question is how far an Olympic appearance will spread the game beyond traditional cricket nations. Olympic history suggests hosting lifts popularity, but lasting expansion requires grassroots investment and domestic structures. Four to six matches will not be enough to grow cricket seriously in the USA, China, Japan or Southeast Asia. The ICC has signalled that it intends to keep building competitive structures in those countries after the Games.
The road to Los Angeles 2028 is still long. Qualification rules, participation pathways, venue and match schedule all await formal announcement. But the direction is clear. A curiosity at Paris 2026, cricket will now be played for a medal at the world's largest multi-sport event. More than a billion South Asian viewers will enter the Olympic audience, and cricket will get the stage it has waited 128 years for. In the history of the sport, this is more than a staging decision — it is a signal that the Olympics is redefining itself for a changing world.
